to see how absolutely unbelievable our band was in the 1980s - that's me at the back,
illustrating a style known in the trade as "enthusiastic drumming" (if the link doesn't work,
do a search on YouTube for "Johnny and the Retreads").
BackgroundMy partner and I have been together for well over 40 years. I have learned a great deal from her, as I have from our two children, now grown up. I like other countries, but not the travelling. I still live about 200 yards from where I lived in the 1950s. Co-counselling was a big influence on my life, from the 1980s, and I still practice occasionally. Currently (Summer 2016) I am working on a course developed from my book Buddhism#now: a rational, non-religious, non-supernatural, non-theistic belief system, free from all technical and obscure language.
After completing a physics degree at Hull University in 1967 I took a Diploma in Education in Sheffield then taught physics for seven years in Salford and North Shields . In 1979 I re-qualified, with a degree in psychology then a masters in educational psychology from Newcastle University and entered practice as an educational psychologist, first in Sunderland then North Tyneside. Later I also qualified as a hypnotherapist and became a member of the British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis.
Training and consultancy with a wide range of settings and institutions has been an important part of professional involvement throughout my career. However, a main focus of professional interest, day to day, has been on interventions with parents, schools and children, particularly around behaviour difficulties of an attention seeking kind. There is a trilogy of publications around this theme:
"Attention seeking: A complete guide for teachers (2nd edition) (Sage)". This is for schools
"The Good, the Bad and the Irritating (Sage)". This is for parents.
"Helping parents deal with attention seeking behaviour: A training pack for practitioners". This is for psychologists. It is available at https://sites.google.com/site/nigelsbitsandbobs/Home/parents
Developing research interests led to a PhD at Northumbria University in 1999. The main focus of that work is available as a seminar (see Training and Consultancy page); as a book The Secrets of the Doctorate available on https://sites.google.com/site/nigelsbitsandbobs/Home/messy-method-the-secrets-of-the-doctorate or as a webcast https://youtu.be/f3VyEXZvI-M. The thesis itself can be found on this web site.
Currently I teach a couple of regular seminars on "Messy method" and "writing blocks" to PhD students at Newcastle University.
About 1999 I began to study Buddhism. This led to my book Buddhism#now - an attempt to demystify the whole area with simple language and humour, and no jargon or supernaturalism.
As to the creative side, a first volume of poetry For the Inquiry is available on the web site. A second volume of poetry is painfully slowly being assembled.
